One Love Organics is based on St. Simons island off the coast of Georgia, which is also where my family and I live – it’s very beautiful, very hot, and very sunny. So I’m extra diligent about safeguarding my fair skin from the sun, and have lots of different sun care strategies.
Sun Care for Skin
Along with wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which is always going to be your best skin-saving strategy, I also love using our antioxidant-rich OLO products. By layering different serums that contain all those good-for-your-skin antioxidants with that oh-so-important sunscreen, I’m giving my skin what it needs to stay healthy, glow-y, and optimally moisturized.
I also try to stay out of the sun whenever I can, especially during the middle of the day when the sun’s rays are the strongest. But that’s not always possible, so whether I’m at the beach or pool, or just watching my boys’ baseball games, you better believe I’m wearing a big ol’ floppy hat and sunglasses. (Oh, and you’re also pretty much guaranteed to find me sitting in the shade, always.)
But my safe sun strategies don’t stop with these external techniques. I like to give my skin a boost from the inside out, too. For me, that means eating and drinking more antioxidants. I take advantage of all the amazing produce from local farms down here and load up on summer’s fresh fruit and veggies. I love a smoothie in the morning and a big salad for lunch, and I drink lots of green and black tea, too. And to go along with that, I also like to take certain supplements.
Sun Care Supplements
There are three that work especially well for me:
Don’t worry, I won’t ask you to say that three times fast. This is a powerful carotenoid that comes from an algae and, fun fact alert, it’s actually why flamingos are pink. They’re born white, but when they eat the algae that contains the astaxanthin, it turns them a pretty pink color and also shields them from the sun. I’ve been taking it for two years and was so impressed with how well it works that I decided to add it to both our Botanical C Facial Serum and Botanical E Youth Preservation Serum.
You may have seen this spice at the grocery store or in different Indian recipes; it’s a top pick for helping fight inflammation. The only drawback? It can be hard for your body to absorb turmeric. That’s why I look for turmeric supplements that are standardized and have both a black pepper extract and coconut oil, all of which help with absorption.
3. Ascorbyl Palmitate
I was inspired to start taking this form of vitamin C because we were using it in our OLO products to help safeguard the oils in the formulas and increase their shelf life. Vitamin C is one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants; it works by limiting the production of skin-damaging free radicals caused by environmental factors like pollution and toxins.
