Face it: our faces deal with a lot.
As the most exposed part of our bodies, in just a normal day our faces take on everything from makeup and sunscreen to dirt, dust, sweat, dead skin cells, and oxidized sebum, which can lead to dull skin tone, residual build-up or blemishes.
But a simple upgrade to your evening routine can wipe the slate (and your skin!) clean for another day!
Ending your day with two separate face washes, back-to-back, helps to remove all the debris that settles on your face throughout the day, leaving your skin looking healthy, radiant, and clean.
That’s right, we’re talking about double cleansing.
How Does Double Cleansing Work?
The most important thing to remember in double cleansing is that like dissolves like.
Because there are two types of dirt: oil-based dirt (like the oil in make-up) and oxidized sebum and water-based dirt (like dust and sweat), we need to consider two different types of cleansing. Water and oil don’t blend well together because of their conflicting properties, which makes two different types of cleansers ideal for the full spectrum of cleansing.
Double cleansing is the ideal way to cleanse your face in the evening in order to remove both types of dirt but isn’t necessary in the morning if you’re not wearing makeup.
- First, oil removes oil. (Yes, even for oily or blemished skin!) This step clears away oil and makeup, and rich, oil-based cleansers prevent skin from feeling dry or irritated.
- Then, a second wash with a mild foaming cleanser removes any residue and water-based dirt like dust and sweat, leaving skin fully cleansed and deeply purified.
Whether you’re new to double cleansing or looking to upgrade your existing routine, we have you covered.
Double-cleansing is as easy as one, two…done!
An oil-based cleanser removes makeup, sunscreen and other oils, and conditions the skin.
Using clean, dry hands, apply a small amount of rich, soothing Skin Savior Balm or OLO fan favorites Botanical B Cleansing Oil or Cleansing Solid to your dry face and massage gently for one to two minutes. Remove the balm using a warm, damp washcloth. The Botanical B Cleansing Oil and Solid are designed to simply rinse clean with water, no washcloth required.
A water-based foaming cleanser removes water-based dirt like dust and sweat and deeply purifies the skin.
For this step, you may choose a long-time favorite like our soothing Easy Does It foaming cleanser, or if you want to get even more out of your double-cleansing routine, you can use our Botanical A Facial Cleanser, with the dual exfoliating action of AHA and BHA, nourishing Vitamin A, and a state-of-the-art blend of plant-based cleansers to leave skin smooth, luminous, and (of course!) clean.
Be sure to include your neck, jawline area and behind your ears, and spend a little more time on your t-zone area. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Skimping on rinsing may lead to residue build-up, which can cause breakouts and skin irritation and may decrease the results of your favorite treatment product.
Psst: We love applying our foaming cleansers with a konjac Cleansing Sponge. The unique heart shape is ideal for cleaning hard-to-reach areas like the sides of the nose and the jawline and gently conforms to the face as you wash.
What Are the Benefits of Double-cleansing?
The obvious goal of cleansing your face is, well, a clean face. But double cleansing takes this to the next level, targeting oil-based and water-based buildup individually in order to fully remove debris that can be damaging to your complexion.
Proper cleansing is the foundation of effective skin care, and freshly and deeply cleansed skin is also the very best base to receive and benefit from the positive effects of treatment products.
After double cleansing, while skin is still damp, lock in moisture and make the most of your treatment’s active ingredients by applying your favorite facial oil, serum, or moisturizer immediately. Be sure to include your neck, décolleté, and the back of your hands.
Pro tip: Wash your pillowcase! Your pillow is a collection site for dirt and oil left by your skin. Be sure to wash your pillowcase every week as part of your clear-skin plan.
Adding a nightly double cleanse to your skincare routine may seem like a simple step, but properly cleansed skin can have a significant impact on your complexion, and on how effective the rest of your skincare treatments can be. Remember — when it comes to fully cleansed and purified skin, it takes two!
