In the skincare world, antioxidants are one of the top superstars on the scene. Why? Think of them as the kryptonite to skin-damaging free radicals.
Let’s start with the basics.
What are free radicals, anyway?
Free radicals are charged particles of oxygen that enter into destructive chemical bonds with organic substances, such as proteins. Exposure to UV rays–and other environmental factors, like pollution–leads to the formation of free radicals.
Sounds super science-y, we know, but what that means when it comes to your skin is that these pesky particles are one of the leading instigators of fine lines, wrinkles, sagging, and spots. That’s where antioxidants come in to save the day (erm, your skin), helping to minimize the damaging effects of free radicals and encouraging a more youthful complexion. Yes, please.
So it’s no surprise that antioxidants are found in many of our plant-based OLO products, designed to leave your skin healthy and glowing. For your complexion, the Botanical C Facial Serum and Botanical E Youth Preservation Serum are great picks, while the Gardenia + Tea Antioxidant Body Serum is perfect for the skin below your chin.
These all pack a whole host of plant-powered antioxidants, such as vitamin C, green tea, and sea buckthorn. While using a broad-spectrum sunscreen is your best line of defense for sun damage, layering that with these OLO products is another great way to combat environmental stressors.
Antioxidants From the Inside Out
But here’s the thing: It’s important to think about not only what you’re putting on your skin, but how you’re nourishing it from the inside, too. As the saying goes, you are what you eat, and that most definitely applies to antioxidants. By ingesting antioxidants, you’re giving your skin that same free radical-fighting advantage, and doing good things for your body and health, in general.
There’s no shortage of different antioxidants to choose from, but they’re especially easy to get via fruits and veggies. The more colorful the better! Here are some (yummy) suggestions:
RED: ‘Tis the season for watermelon! It’s one of the best sources of lycopene, a carotenoid (the pigment that gives it its red hue) that acts as a great antioxidant. Eat it by the slice, or go savory and make it the star of a colorful salad.
ORANGE: Carrots for the win. They’re full of beta-carotene, an antioxidant that pulls double duty by converting into vitamin A (another great for your skin vitamin) in the body. Try sauteíng them in some coconut oil with onion, turmeric, and ginger, then blending that up with a little coconut milk for a quick and easy soup that’s delicious eaten chilled on a hot summer day.
YELLOW: Think beyond just green peppers—yellow ones are equally versatile and a great source of vitamin C, one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants. Next time you’re grilling throw a few whole ones on the grill until they’re charred, then peel off the skin. Chop them up and mix with cherry tomatoes, basil, olive oil, salt and pepper, and serve on top of toasted bread for an unexpected twist on classic bruschetta.
GREEN: It’s not just fruits and veggies that are your best source of antioxidants. Green tea is incredibly rich in antioxidants, and is also a great source of polyphenols, molecules that have hydrating and anti-inflammatory benefits. (We’ll drink to that.) Brew a big batch, add a little bit of lemon and honey, then chill in the fridge for an ultra-refreshing beverage.
BLUE: Tiny but mighty, blueberries are another great source of vitamin C and also contain some vitamin E, not to mention are a good source of fiber, too. Make them a breakfast staple by blending them into a smoothie, or use them as a topping for a chia bowl. (Bonus: Chia seeds also contain antioxidants.).
PURPLE: If cabbage isn’t a part of your regular veggie rotation, it should be—especially the purple kind, which has more antioxidants than other varieties, specifically vitamins A and C. Slice it up and toss with shredded carrots, a spoonful of Greek yogurt, and a splash of apple cider vinegar for a healthier take on coleslaw that will be the perfect side dish for any summer barbecue.
So when it comes to reaping the benefits of antioxidants, be sure to adopt this two-prong approach. Get the external benefits from your OLO product line-up and load up on more antioxidants in your diet—trust us, your skin will thank you.
