Stress can have a significant negative impact our skin, but thankfully, focusing on daily moments of self-care can lessen its effects. To enhance mindfulness and help you look and feel better, I’m sharing some of my favorite holistic ways to unwind and de-stress during your evening skincare ritual. I hope you find these 3 tips helpful in creating your very own nightly self-care routine.
Incorporate mindful breathing into your skincare ritual
No one talks about the difficulties associated with meditation, but meditating can be hard! Personally, I have been trying it off and on for a few years with little success; I can’t ever seem to quiet my mind or stop my racing thoughts…which then makes me feel like I am failing! Ugh.
Breathing is different. It’s a fun and easy way to practice self-care. I count while I am doing it, giving me much-needed mental focus and keeping it simple, too. Here’s what I do:
Breathe through the nose and inhale for four counts. Hold for four counts. Then exhale for four counts.
(create graphic that shows an inverted triangle. Inhale 4 counts on the side of the triangle going up, hold for 4 counts on the flat side and exhale on the opposite side of the triangle coming down).
That’s it. Do it for about five minutes or ten rounds total – as long as it feels good to you. Bonus: Adding deep breathing to a habit you already have – like washing your face – can make it more likely to stick.
Massage your face while cleansing
Cleansing is a nighttime routine that many of us do, although often not mindfully. This evening task is actually a great time to add in facial massage, enhancing a glow and offering a bit of self-care that’s perfect before bedtime. Follow these steps:
Start with clean, dry hands and pull your hair back prior to massaging. Pump one to two pumps of Botanical B Cleansing Oil into your hands and massage the cleanser onto dry skin, working in an upwards direction: Start on your forehead and move outward toward your temples, going gently around your eyes a few times. Finally, work your way downward along the nose, cheeks, jawline and neck.
After you massage your whole face for about one minute, go back over any troublesome areas, like the T-zone and jawline. Then, rinse off the cleansing oil with lukewarm water, and pat your face dry. Spritz on a moisture mist and apply your favorite moisturizer or serum to truly de-stress.
I promise this will be more of a treat than a chore. Also, massaging an oil cleanser into your skin—instead of just rubbing it on and immediately rinsing it off—can increase its efficacy. Fun and effective? Yes, please!
Sip on your favorite warm herbal tea
Drinking a “sleep tea”—a tea that is caffeine-free—as part of your evening skincare routine can have a calming effect. It can help get your mind ready for bed, alleviating stress and setting you up sleep better. Win, win, win!
I recommend sipping on a mug of tea about 20 to 30 minutes before bed for that skin-boosting snooze you’ve been dreaming of. I love lavender, chamomile and peppermint for the evening, but so many are available—it’s fun to experiment! Just make sure to avoid varieties that contain black, green, or white tea leaves because they contain caffeine.
(P.S. I often add a tablespoon of chia seeds to my tea in the evening. Besides providing a powerhouse of antioxidant benefits, chia is also rich in fiber, helping to support a feeling of fullness for more restful sleep.)
