The temperatures are rising and that little bikini in the back of your drawer is calling your name (or the kids are calling your name from the other room yelling “Mom, let’s go to the pool!”, am I right?). We gotta say that we don’t mind a trip to the local swimming pool. A little Vitamin D, some ice cream, maybe a few quiet minutes with a book while the kids splash. One of the best parts of summer.
But before you slip on that itty-bitty-bikini, remember to plan ahead for how to protect your skin from sun damage. We recommend shade and coverage, which are the best and most natural ways to protect your skin from the sun’s rays. Grab your biggest hat, throw the beach umbrella in the car, and let us provide you with tips for achieving a flawless faux glow!
For the perfect sunless tan we turn to the Beauty Queen herself, Elizabeth Dehn of Beauty Bets, and our friend Mollie Michura, owner of The Glow Lounge, for tips on how to get the best application and the most mileage out of your spray tan.
The Day Before
Molly and Elizabeth both recommend exfoliating with our Vitamin C Body Polish one day before your appointment. “Take a hefty dollop and really focus it on areas like your knees and elbows,” says Elizabeth, “Those areas tend to have dead, dry skin, and if not removed it can absorb more of the sunless tanner, making those areas appear darker.”
The Day Of
Take a warm (not hot) shower or bath and do a light exfoliation and a thorough shave. When you get out, avoid applying moisturizer! As tempting as it is to assume that lotion or oil will hydrate your skin and improve your sun tan, this isn’t exactly the case. Lotions and creams can create a barrier on your skin, making it difficult for your faux glow to adhere.
When you head to the salon, put some thought into what you wear. The sunless tan needs time to absorb, and any excessive rubbing can make your tan uneven or splotchy. Our go-to ensemble is a long black maxi with a built in bra.
The Day After
The recommendation is to wait 24 hours before showering or bathing. So once you take your first shower, follow it up with an application of body serum, which will lock in moisture and help to prolong your glow. Mollie says, “I use Gardenia + Tea Body Serum for daily moisture that helps maintain my color, and have had fantastic results.”
So, there you have it. All the tips you need to get a little glow before summer kicks off! Sundresses, shorts and afternoons spent poolside! You glow, girl.
